How to Backup Passwords Saved In Firefox

Mozilla Firefox is now my main web browser for over a decade. It's not the fastest browser for Windows operating system.

Before Firefox 57, we can easily export the extensions saved in the Firefox browser. This helps you when you need to do backup passwords in Firefox or reinstall Windows OS.

As you know, add-ons passwords saved in Firefox are not yet applicable for Firefox 57 and 58. You can view the saved passwords in Firefox by navigating to Preferences> Privacy & Security> Saved Logins section. There is no option to export or import from a file (import from a file).

Most Firefox users use third-party password usage solutions such as LastPass, KeePass, and do not require an option to export passwords. Because these password managers are based on the cloud (save passwords in the cloud), all users will not have to use them for security reasons. In many of you, I would like to use Firefox's built-in password manager (of course using an important password).

Like me, if you use Firefox's built-in password manager and wish to back up Firefox themes, you have very limited options.

In this guide, we will discuss some easy ways to backup Firefox passwords on Windows.

Method 1: Manually backup key4.db and logins.json files

Do you know, The Firefox saves your passwords as key4.db and logins.json files. These files are located in your Firefox profile folder. You can back up these two files to export all passwords. After reinstalling Windows or Firefox, you can import the same password again. How to do that.

To Export Passwords

Step 1: Open Run command(by pressing Windows key + R)

Step 2: Paste the following path into it.( this leads to profile folder)
%APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\
Step 3: In the profile folder, find the files called key.db and logins.json

Step 4: Copy these files to any other safe location and you're done.

To import passwords

The current key4.db and logins.json files are replaced once you reinstalling firefox or windows. and we recommend that you delete all existing passwords currently installed as soon as you have re-installed existing Firefox or Windows.

Step 1: Open Run command(by pressing Windows key + R)

Step 2: Paste the following path into it.( this leads to profile folder)
%APPDATA%\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\
Step 3: In the profile folder, paste the previously backup key.db and logins.json. That's it!.

Method 2: Use PasswordFox to backup Firefox passwords

PasswordFox is a Free Application from known NirSoft. Download and run a password to view all saved passwords in Firefox. In Firefox, all user passwords with usernames and URLs are saved. Note that this tool works well on Firefox 57 and 58.

To export all passwords to an HTML file, select all passwords and then report HTML - the option of all items. Passwords will only be selected for you to back up, select the passwords you want to back up, and then report HTML - click on the Selected Items option.

Method 3: Manually note down Firefox passwords

If you do not want to use the above methods, then you have to manually backup all saved passwords by noting down each username and password.

Step 1: Open Firefox and press ALT key and Click Tools > Options

Step 2: Goto Privacy& Security tab and click saved logins. In this menu click show password button to view all saved passwords.

Step 3: Note down the al username and passwords and you're done.
